The Pacifica Islanders hosted the Central Coast Barnstormers
this past Saturday at Terra Nova High School. These teams
are considered to be two of the best in West Coast minor
league football. It was the Islander's first home game of
the season and also their first time playing in front of a
televised audience. The game was filmed by a private film
company for web broadcast, community channel 26 along with
other media outlets. The Comcast film crew that was
mentioned last week was postponed until their next home game
on March 28th due to the poor weather forecast for the 21st.
The Islanders would get on the board first, with 2 of 3 of
kicker Colby Cason's field goals coming in the first
quarter. But the Barnstormers would take control of the game
when Barnstormer quarterback Bryan Smith connected with wide
receiver Greg Walton for a couple of touchdown scores,
giving the Barnstormers the lead 7-6 and then 14-6. The
Islanders came marching back down the field and Jarmar
Julien, the league's leading rusher, would make an
outstanding play spinning and breaking several tackles when
it looked as if he had been stopped. Jarmar scored
Pacifica’s first TD making it 14-13 Barnstormers.
The Barnstormers would capitalize on a fumble at the
Islander's own 1 yard line, and would quickly put it in the
end zone on a quarterback sneak by Bryan Smith. With less
than 5 minutes in the half, Jason Piccolotti came into the
game to take over for struggling quarterback Orlando Evans
who was suffering from back spasms, he drove the Islanders
down the field and was able to add 3 more on Colby Cason's
third field goal of the game, making the score 21 to 16 in
favor of the Barnstormers.
On the very next drive with less than a minute to go in the
half, Islanders' Scott "the Enforcer" Burke would make a
spectacular interception, giving the Islander's the ball in
Barnstormer's territory. The Islanders would then capitalize
with less than 10 seconds on the clock when Jason Piccolotti
connected with Jarmar Julien on a touchdown pass- that would
not only give the Islanders the lead, 23-21, but more
importantly the momentum going into the second half.
And that momentum would carry on while on the first play
from scrimmage of the second half, Jason Piccolotti would
connect with wide out Obioma "the Amazing One" Ngumezi for a
60 yard touchdown pass. Jason Piccolotti had a great outing-
also connecting with wide receiver Donyell Crain for a
touchdown. Piccolotti would finish the night with 123 yards
and 3 touchdowns.
Not only did the Islanders have a great passing game, their
rushing game was dominant as well. The Islander's offensive
line once again created huge holes for running backs, Jarmar
Julien (18 carries for 154 yards and 1 touchdown) and Calvin
Edwards (9 carries for 67 yards and 1 touchdown). The
Islanders controlled the second half and would go on to win
50-28.
This Saturday, March 28 the Islanders will host the
undefeated North Bay Rattlers, last year's Golden Coast
Football League champions at Terra Nova High School at
5:30pm. This game will be filmed for broadcast on Comcast
sports. Come be part of the action!
